What Is Serum?
Serum is a very powerful anti aging skin care product that is typically applied to the face to brighten the skin and reduce wrinkles, or take care of other skin care issues. Everyone should be using serum regularly. They contain active ingredients in very high concentrations compared to other skin care products, so an application is usually only a few drops. There are many different serums with different combinations of active ingredients, which will be covered in this article. By understanding what the different serums do, you will be able to select and use them to specifically target your own skin care needs.
Serum is an excellent skin care product and it is highly recommended to include them in your skin care routine. Regularly using serums that target the skin health issues you are trying to fix will go a long way in helping you to stay healthy and looking young and beautiful for a long time.
Serum, Face Oil, Essence… Are They The Same Or Different?
This can be confusing because sometimes you hear these terms used interchangeably. To make it very simple…
- Serums are traditionally water based with a thick texture. They go on after cleansing and before moisturizing.
- Essences are made with the same kinds of ingredients as serums and work the same way, but are a bit watered down with a thinner texture. They can be applied the same way as a serum.
- A face oil is basically an oil based serum. However, these are designed to go on after a moisturizer and protect the moisturizer.
Let’s Have A Look At The Active Ingredients You Will Find
Vitamin E: An antioxidant that helps to neutralize free radicals, which are damaging to the skin and create wrinkles. Vitamin E has anti aging effects and can reduce the appearance of wrinkles, dark spots, scars, and stretch marks if used frequently. It also is oil soluble, which means it has moisturizing properties; it is good for dry or irritated skin.
Vitamin C: Also known as ascorbic acid, vitamin C protects against foreign impurities, helps the skin retain moisture, and acts as an antioxidant that helps with firmness.
Green Tea: Green tea is an antioxidant with anti inflammatory properties. It is known to preemptively slow down aging and also to neutralize free radicals. The effectiveness of sunscreen is increased with the use of green tea because it protects against skin cancer and helps with sun damage. Using skin care products with green tea at night will help with cellular skin repair overnight.
Resveratrol: Found in the skins of grapes, resveratrol is an antioxidant that works very well with hyaluronic acid to increase the skin’s production of collagen and elastin. These help the skin to stay elastic and firm and look youthful longer.
Hyaluronic Acid: Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring chemical in the skin that is responsible for retaining moisture. If your skin is low on hyaluronic acid, it has a tendency to dry out and wrinkle. Hyaluronic acid works well as an ingredient in serum because it helps the skin maintain moisture and elasticity, which are both very important for anti aging.
Ferulic Acid: An antioxidant that goes well with Vitamin C and E by enhancing the stability of their topical application. It protects the skin against environmental hazards as well.
Grape Seed Oil: A powerful anti aging ingredient and moisturizer for sensitive or acne-prone skin. Grape seed oil will not clog the pores like other oil products. It provides protection from the sun and increases collagen production, which helps the skin maintain a youthful appearance.
Retinol (Vitamin A): Retinol may be the single most powerful anti aging ingredient found in skin care products. Using a serum with retinol is the best way to reduce wrinkles and other signs of aging. You should not use retinol more than a few times a week; it will irritate the skin and do more harm than good if used too often. And be sure to balance it out with other skin care ingredients.
Niacinamide (Vitamin B3): Niacinamide smooths the overall look of the skin by evening out the skin tone, reducing the size of the pores, and getting rid of fine lines. It also offers protection from environmental concerns, such as heat and sunlight.
Ceramides: Ceramides restore moisture and strengthen the skin, increasing its ability to protect against outside impurities. Ceramides are also good for treating conditions like eczema and psoriasis; these conditions are characterized by a deficiency of ceramides.
So, What Serums Are Right For Me?
Peter Thomas Roth Retinol Fusion PM
A very powerful anti aging serum with Vitamin C and E and 1.5% Retinol.
- The retinol is the powerhouse ingredient that reduces signs of aging.
- This is complemented by Vitamin E, which fights free radicals and is beneficial to dry or irritated skin because of its moisturizing properties.
- The Vitamin C component offers moisture retention and a layer of protection from the elements.
This serum is designed to go on at night so the ingredients work while you sleep. You definitely want to use sunscreen the next morning, because retinol makes the skin more vulnerable to the sun’s rays. This serum will require a slow start (don’t use it too often at first) so your skin can build a tolerance to the retinol if you haven’t used it before. It should not be used more than a few times a week, and even less if you have sensitive skin.
